Right Ascension | by David Derrico Nov. 16, 2009 | Free! | 74436 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: David Derrico was born just north of Miami, Florida, and developed his appreciation for complex moral issues while receiving a degree in philosophy from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He wrote his first novel, Right Ascension, before attending law school at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). Right Ascension was first published by Bookbooters Press in 2000, and garnered its inaugural eBook of the Year Award. Derrico wrote his second novel, Declination, during law school, while he was probably supposed to be studying. Nonetheless, he graduated, passed the California Bar Exam, and worked as an attorney at a large, international law firm in Los Angeles for several years. While practicing law (all that practice actually made him pretty good at it), he managed to write some short stories and start work on his third novel, The Twiller. Recently, Derrico retired from his “day job†as a big-firm attorney and moved back to South Florida, where he finished that third novel. The Twiller follows the (mis)adventures of an unlikely hero and his unique companion on a comic romp around the galaxy. Derrico maintains a website with reviews, excerpts, current news, a blog, and purchasing information for all of his novels and other works at www.davidderrico.com. |

John Smith, World Jumper Book One: Portal to Adventure, Part Nine | by E. Patrick Dorris Jan. 19, 2010 | You set the price! | 4968 words | Sample 50% |
| Author bio: In my forty something years I have generated a very broad set of experiences and interests, but through it all, I have always read. It seems that at times it is harder to find books that enthrall me, although admittedly I am behind on my reading, so I decided to start writing the kind of stories I'd want to read. I have always had stories in my head, they intrude at the strangest times. At some point, I discovered that when I took the time to write them down, more stories kept pouring out. There are so many ideas I have, it seems like there won't be enough time to get to them all. I'm starting with one story, in one particular style. But other stories, in different styles are coming. Stay tuned. My goal in writing is above all to entertain. Thank you in advance for giving me that opportunity. |

Crashing? Can we still make Atlantic City? | by Christopher David Petersen Dec. 08, 2011 | Free! | 18841 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Christopher David Petersen (1963 - 20?? I just checked... I'm not dead yet). Born and raised in Connecticut. As a child, I was always daring and reckless. Never one to let common sense stand in the way of a great adventure, my bold feats of stupidity were legendary... Huckleberry Finn would have been proud. "Surprisingly", that same spirit carried over into adulthood, as I sought out entertainment that included: scuba diving; ski Mountaineering; mountain biking; Rock, Ice and Mountain climbing; flying planes; golf, motorcycles, the stock market and of course, experimentation with various alcoholic refreshments. Later in life, writing became an extension of my deep desire to experience "new and exciting worlds". I have written several books, but none have been published through any formal channels... I've heard the process is long, painful and laborious, the thought of which sickens me. My foray into e-publishing came after a friend suggested my works could fetch dollars instead of dust inside my sock drawer... a righteous observation. My recent publications are the result of this advice. Further adventure/suspense novels are soon to be released. An engineer by trade, I have worked all over the U.S. and usually write in my spare time... that is when I'm not enjoying a bottle of Scotch and a quality cigar. I am a naturally long-winded individual, so writing is what happens when I can't get anyone to listen to me anymore... I love all kinds of genres but gravitate more towards suspense. There is nothing like the build up to a great climax... What a rush! Please visit me at: http://christopherdavidpetersen.wordpress.com |

| Author bio: I love a good story, and I love a good joke. These two factors are my biggest influences. My writing is story telling interconnected through jokes. My debut book No Cure for Nature is a comical environmental adventure which explores the personification of Mother Nature rebelling against humankind in a whirlwind of puns, wordplay and heroism. My background is in Environmental Engineering which is where my strong fascination with environmental issues comes from. I am still unaware where my love for puns was born, and story telling most likely stems back to Sesame Street. |

Meddlers In Time- Out of the frying pan, into the fire | by Wayne Watson April 08, 2010 | Free! | 35696 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: About Myself: Born in 1960, it can be said that I was born into one of the more interesting periods in our history. Forty-nine years on, I can certainly say that I have led an interesting life. Factory hand, soldier, technician, labourer, manager, ambulance officer, corrections officer- just to name the main jobs - I think I can truly call myself a jack-of-all-trades It’s been up and down all the way- see-sawing between dirt poor and well-off- in the peak of fitness to near dead a couple of times. I have worked with many fine individuals and many of New Zealand’s worst. I have seen very ordinary people succeed beyond all expectations and watched those destined to do great things fall and loose everything. Working in areas like defense, corrections and ambulance you get a real insight into how people act and react under the most extreme of circumstances. Along the way I got to use a lot of really interesting bits and pieces- the Army was good for that- if a new piece of kit came through the workshops- it wasn’t hard to convince somebody that you needed to try it out! This was a useful background for somebody who wishes to write tales of adventure… Now, like most, I have settled into a quieter life of family and work, with adventure left in the past- although it comes to visit from time to time. I wish it wouldn’t! As life slowed down a little, from the needs of raising a family and an accumulation of old injuries, I started to amuse myself in a fantasy universe distilled from the many tales I had absorbed over the years- this beats the hell out of morning radio while stuck in traffic! This stepped up a gear after a bad car smash left me recovering from multiple injuries over two years. From this period came ‘Meddlers in Time’- my escape from the realities of my life. Writing this story down probably saved my sanity! Nowadays, I’m back at work- spending more time than I would like keeping the local water supplies working. Once a week I get my six-guns out and shoot up a bit of paper and steel plate. Twice a year I fire up my still and run a few gallons of moonshine, although I drink more coffee than whiskey these days. The rest of the time I spend as an indentured servant to my wife and two boys. I’m occasionally described as a grumpy old sod and a know-it-all, with an opinion on EVERYTHING! I try to live up to that. I like the simple pleasures of red meat, black powder smoke, Islay whiskey and the occasional good Dominican cigar- all to be savored in the outdoors. My beliefs are staunchly libertarian- each to their own if they harm no other. I believe that politicians, lawyers, busy-bodies and do-gooders are like salamis- greatly improved by hanging for a time. My writings continue as time permits. UPDATE: Ask me a question or find out more about Meddlers in Time, search 'Meddlers in Time Blogger' I used to have a link here, but for technical reasons, can't put it in my Bio without upsetting some of Smashwords partner sites! |

The Chronicles of Gan: The Thorn | by Daron Fraley Sep. 14, 2010 | Free! | 92433 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Daron Fraley was born in Powell, Wyoming, but doesn’t consider himself a cowboy. Living in France for a couple of years provided him the opportunity to hone his cooking skills and to become addicted to good food and chocolate. Apart from his loving family, teaching and writing are his two most favorite things in the world. A classic computer geek, he still likes to fish and camp, makes a mean apple or pumpkin pie from scratch, and once fixed a gas clothes dryer using photocopier parts. With all of his interests in music, art, the sciences, and religion (especially religion), he would have been quite comfortable living during the Renaissance. Having toured chilly castles while in France, he is glad he didn’t live during that time. “The Thorn†is his first novel. After ten total years in the wonderful state of Indiana, Daron, his wife Jennifer, and their six children once again live in the beautiful Rockies, close to friends and family in Wyoming and Utah. |

Fayna | by Gerard Whittaker Aug. 02, 2011 | Free! | 9401 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Once I was a soldier, getting blown up a few times convinced me that a change of career might be a good idea. However, given some of the jobs I've done since, being shot in the chest could be preferable to being stabbed in the back. I've studied military history. Used most types of swords and medieval weapons. Spent a few years learning how to write. And had my fair share of rejection slips. I'm still hoping to see my work in print. However, in the meantime I want to share my worlds with the world at large. Perhaps someone might suggest ways to improve my writing. I've enjoyed writing When Twilight Falls, but it took too long due to two relationship failures. It's a long book, but I wanted to develop the story slowly with an ever increasing threat level. I've written about eight books so far, not all were completed. I was half way through a novel about an alien invasion, with modern day fighters taking on flying saucers. Then I saw a little film called Independence Day. And sulked for a month. There are too many Sci Fi books written for children, in my opinion. So I'm trying to write for adults, if that includes a bit of sex then so be it. Heroes are just normal people in extraordinary circumstances. When they get the job done, they are still just your average Joe with all the weaknesses of you or I. For some reason most of my worlds are not very nice, I suppose the good worlds don't need saving. So there is plenty of scope for temptation in many forms for the 'Heroes' to fall into. When you put yourself in their place, wouldn't you give in to temptation too? This is the oficial introdution for When Twilight Falls. Not the tiny blurb we are all given. When the TeckSpire Company discovered Sayerass they found a world with a truly human population stuck in an eternal middle-ages. The planet had many more surprises in store, for the inhabitants pre-dated Humanity by a good million years. With all the knowledge of Terran science there was no way it could exist. That did not stop the Company from exploiting the local slave owning society. Reginald Fairly was new from Earth, a junior executive on the fast track to success. He was a good man, but harboured a terrible secret that kept him awake all night in his own private nightmare. He had no compulsion about buying a young slave girl called Sara to help appease his inner demons, even if he had to pull her down into his own personal nightmare. Sara would have to choose whether to trust the strange alien with sinister secrets or betray him. But to help him the innocent child would have to learn to lie, steal and kill. With the knowledge of the mysterious planet’s existence leaking out, various factions converged, each with their own agenda. Some wanted to take it for themselves, some to strip-mine the world and enslave the survivors, and some to blow the obscenity from existence and make way for Terran racial supremacy. But the last faction only wanted to feed. To save the world Reg would have to choose wisely. For in a world without good there was still plenty of evil, and no one was who they seemed to be. Could he trust the saintly Sister Maria of the Temple of Mercy? But even she had surprising talents and an agenda of her own. What about the doctor, a woman who hid her past, allegiance and even her very name, but she did have amazing power. Could he afford her help, and would the price be his soul? Did he have a choice? Or Geo Trace, an ex circus strongman and amateur archaeologist, searching for the astounding secrets that lay hidden for billions of years beneath Sayerssian soil. Perhaps the secret to saving Sayerass lay in an almost forgotten cell in the capital’s sinister Citadel. Or in a cosmic junk yard halfway across known space waiting to be born. Or perhaps it lay in Sara’s courage and love. Only one thing was certain, the tides of cosmic war were approaching the forgotten world, nothing could stop it and very little would survive the onslaught. For when twilight falls on the longest night of the year, and the oldest ones emerge to feed, mankind shall become but a legend. That's it for now, I'm hoping to dust off some for my old books for a rewrite, and you might see them soon. Then next one I'm hoping to release is, Enigma: Voyage of the Damned. Starting off with an invasion of England and the part played by an experimental submarine. Of course it soon escalates out of control... Technically it takes place forty, or four hundred, years before When Twilight Falls. But all my books are independent of each other. All the best to one and all. I wish you the best of luck in avoiding temptation. I've just uploaded a short novel called The Streets of Bucharest. I'm still working on the full sized book and expect it to be online shortly. I'm sorry I screwed up not loading the full version. But I did give it for free to make up for my mistake. The Full version of The Streets of Bucharest is now online. It's only 40,000 words, but I hope you will enjoy it. Enigma: Pt 1. Voyage of the Damned, is now online. Enigma: Pt 2, Cosmic Odyssey, is now online. Enigma: Pt 3, The Final Battle, is now on line to round off the Enigma's voyage. Just rewrote an old book of mine. The Bonds of Time. It was an experiment in erotic drama. With a lot of BDSM thrown in. For anyone interested it also gives a short description of Aeden, a couple of years after the founding. It was not a very nice place when TIME was first being formed for self defence, and long before the Cosmic Guardians were even thought of to protect the Multiverse. Finished Isralla, and am now working on a sequel called Enryn, using a new slant, telling of a war from the Marines' point of view. I'm writing these with as little sex and as much action as the characters will let me. So if anything goes wrong, blame them! Date 13 December 2010 Thanks for the rating, for a writer who lives and works alone any kind of a pat on the back is very welcome. Sometimes... I am intending to finish Of Dusk and Dawn in the New year. But I admit to getting writer's block and being side tracked by Isralla and Enryn. I hope these books will keep you all amused till I can get back to D&D. A word of warning, I've started a new book called The Cloud Knights. A sort of cross between Biggles and Sharp, set in a crazy world you will not recgignise. So if you like the idea of biplanes versus airships, politics and treason, and a hero determined to rise from the ranks to become a Cloud Knight, fighting for freedom in a world were every thing is for sale to those with the rank to clame it. Then you might like it. I'm determined not to get sidtracked this time, so I hope to publish the full book in a few weeks. I also draw my own book covers, using DAZ Studio, which explains how I keep uploading new covers. Gerard Whittaker |

| Author bio: Special Note: Hello everyone, and thank you for visiting our Authors Page. We are delighted to announce that we have just published our first novel, Amanda Ackers and The Deep Forest Elves. We are still in shock that so many people had liked our short stories. From November 14th of 2011, to February 7th of 2012, our little short stories and new novel have been downloaded over 3,469 times, with the novel being downloaded 723 times in one month! We are very thankful to you all, for supporting our work, which we do for the enjoyment of it. Our thanks also, to the many of you who have emailed us, with kind comments on our stories, and those who had requested receiving a prerelease version of our novel. We had never thought of doing that, but what a great idea. It gave many a chance to read the novel before we actually published it. Thanks to all of you! We are most humbled by the response we have received, and thank you from the top, middle and bottom of our hearts! Book Two of the Amanda Ackers series, Amanda Ackers and The Realm Of The Witches, will be out near the end of the year. Should any of you like a prerelease version, please let us know. As you know, we do require you to sign a non-disclosure agreement and fax it back to us… it’s just good business practice. Please let us hear from you when you get the chance. Email us at: GlennAndSasha@gmail.com -------------------------------------------- Hello and thank you for visiting our Smashwords.com page. My name is Sasha Gabriel, and I would like to take a few moments to say a little about Glenn and myself. They say that creativity belongs to the young. Well, not always. Young at heart, I’ll buy, but nothing else. Writing is relatively new for me. I’ve been an avid reader for most of my 60+ years. But writing seemed daunting. How do you write an idea to get over to other people without boring them to death? How do you write conversations that sound like the people who are speaking them? Once I studied the “how to’s†a bit, and with the encouragement from Glenn, my wonderful husband and best friend, I started writing. And I love it. So does Glenn. Writing has opened a door for me that nothing else has – my imagination has soared and I’m absolutely thrilled and thankful, from the bottom of my heart, that others like my writing, as well. Both Glenn and I have been submitting very, very short stories (no more than 600 word stories) because these are also being entered into a writing contest with that directive. At the same time, both Glenn and I are writing novels (Glenn’s is awesome!!!! Think the depth of Lord of the Rings with the immediacy of Harry Potter and you’ve got it!). But I want to share something with you all… Glenn has battled Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia almost his entire life. That’s a mouthful, for sure, but try living with them on a daily basis! Even so, Glenn has worked to overcome the more serious side effects and his talent in writing, painting, and all over creativity is nothing short of staggering. Honestly… I’m running to keep up with him but I’m mostly just out of breath! So… the bottom line is… we’re all just human with all our challenges and it’s those challenges that make what we create that much better. Please… If you like to read… then write. If you like to paint… then paint. Pick up that paintbrush and start. For writing, get to your keyboard and begin. We think you’ll surprise yourself at your talents. And, again… Thank You all for your kind and generous words of appreciation for our stories! It means the world to us! ----------------------------- Glenn here. Just wanted to add that we never thought anyone would even read our work, let alone have downloaded our little stories hundreds of times in less than a month. Because of the kind words from you all, I will continue to write. I have, as Sasha had mentioned, been writing a novel which I was writing for fun, for our grandson Logan. I was not going to publish it, just print it out to give to him. Now… once the first book of that series is finished, I’ll publish it here for FREE. My thanks to all of you. Feel free to contact Sasha and I at the following email address. We would love to hear from you: GlennAndSasha@gmail.com |
